Republican-Funded Super PACs Target Democratic Primaries

The 2010 *Citizens United* ruling and a later federal decision permitted super PACs to raise and spend unlimited sums. Pop-up super PACs can register weeks before filing deadlines, allowing donors to remain hidden until after primary elections. Similar tactics were observed in the 2018 West Virginia Senate primary and the 2022 DCCC-backed primary challenge to Rep. Peter Meijer.

FEC filings show Conservative Americans PAC, a Republican-aligned super PAC, received 2026 funding from the Virginia nonprofit American Prosperity Alliance. It transferred $3 million to Lead Left PAC and $1.2 million to Real Change PAC, which then spent in Democratic primaries in Texas, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Nebraska, Maine, and California.
