Historical Context

On 24 June 2004 Christie's auctioned Eric Clapton’s Fender Stratocaster “Blackie” for $959,500, with Guitar Center buying it to fund Clapton’s Crossroads Centre drug-rehab clinic. The sale built on his 1999 “Brownie” auction, which set a guitar-price record, and inspired later charity sales such as the 2006 tsunami-benefit guitar that fetched $2.8 million.
