Katayama Discusses Yen
- Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama said she spoke by phone with U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, reaffirming a joint understanding to act on the yen.
- The yen hovered near a four-decade low, trading 161.93 per dollar and around 161.40-161.58 on June 22-23.
- Interventions from April 28 to May 27 cost a record ¥11.73 trillion ($72.6 billion).
- Bessent said excess FX volatility is undesirable and prefers Japan support the yen with higher rates rather than intervene.
