History

Historical Context

In July 1987 the United States launched Operation Earnest Will, escorting Kuwaiti-flagged tankers through the Strait of Hormuz after Iran began mining the Gulf during the Iran-Iraq war. The first convoy, protected by four frigates, three cruisers and a destroyer, encountered nine Iranian mines that damaged the tanker Bridgeton. The operation’s naval show-of-force set a precedent for today’s Oman-Iran working group on Gulf navigation.
