Historical Context

In July 2006 Hezbollah’s cross-border raid triggered the 34-day Lebanon War, prompting Israel’s Operation Change of Direction against Hezbollah’s tunnel-based guerrilla tactics. The conflict ended with UN Resolution 1701 on 14 August 2006 after Hezbollah fired about 4,000 rockets. The newly found Majdal Zoun tunnel complex revives the same underground threat, spurring Israel’s tunnel-detection efforts.
