Historical Context

During the 1979-1981 Iran hostage crisis, Algeria mediated the Algiers Accords signed on 19 January 1981, which freed 52 American hostages after 444 days and unlocked roughly $8 billion of frozen Iranian assets. The accords also created a claims tribunal that still resolves residual disputes. New U.S.–Iran talks announced in June 2024 revive that mediation model.
