Historical Context

In August 2006 the UN Security Council adopted Resolution 1701, ending the 34-day Israel-Hezbollah war and authorizing up to 15,000 UNIFIL troops to monitor the southern Lebanon cease-fire. The resolution also created a multinational framework that placed the Lebanese army in charge of the security zone. The new five-nation deconfliction cell of 2024-25 echoes that 2006 model, using coordinated diplomatic channels to curb Israeli strikes.
