Historical Context

In July 2006 Hezbollah’s cross-border raid killed three Israeli soldiers and captured two, sparking a 34-day war. The UN Security Council adopted Resolution 1701 on 11 August 2006, ordering Israel’s pullout, Lebanese army deployment and expanding UNIFIL to about 15,000 troops. That cease-fire framework now underpins calls for renewed Israeli withdrawal and Lebanese troop presence today.
