Joy Division Unveils ‘Eternal (Live)’ Box Set
Rhino Records announced that ‘Eternal (Live)’ will be issued on September 25, 2026. The anthology assembles audio from 16 Joy Division concerts recorded between March 1979 and May 1980, distributed across 14 CDs and two DVDs, and is timed to precede the band’s Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction later that year.
Historical Context
Joy Division’s brief three-year career (1977-1980) produced two studio albums and a reputation for intense live shows. Bootleg recordings of those performances have circulated for decades, but no official comprehensive live collection existed until now.
Collection Details
The set includes two unreleased gigs—Hope & Anchor and Acklam Hall (both London)—and three unheard recordings from The Factory (Manchester), the Lyceum (London) and the Moonlight Club (London). It also contains the final concert at High Hall, Birmingham (May 2, 1980). Sources include audience cassettes, soundboard tapes and radio broadcasts, all mastered at Abbey Road Studios; the box features a 16-page booklet with notes by Simon Armitage and photos by Anton Corbijn, Kevin Cummins and others.
Production and Contributors
Surviving members Bernard Sumner, Peter Hook and Stephen Morris oversaw the project. Rhino coordinated the compilation; mastering was done at Abbey Road Studios. Artwork was designed by Warren Jackson, Peter Saville, Howard Wakefield and Brett Wickens, with cover photography by Wolfgang Tillmans.
Critical Reception & Official Position
The label acknowledges that audio quality varies widely across the sources, reflecting the lo-fi character of many fan-recorded tapes. Despite this, Rhino markets the anthology as the first official compilation of Joy Division live concerts and emphasizes that the set offers higher-quality versions, particularly for the previously unheard performances, positioning it as a definitive archival release.
