On June 25-26 1876, Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong Custer’s 7th Cavalry was annihilated by Lakota leader Sitting Bull, Crazy Horse and allied Cheyenne and Arapaho on the Crow Reservation, killing 268 soldiers. The defeat intensified U.S. pressure that led to the 1889 Dawes Act and later prompted the 1991 renaming of the site to Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument, where descendants of ten tribes now gather.
