NHTSA Removes Brake Pedal
- The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has begun rulemaking to amend Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards, proposing to eliminate the physical brake pedal requirement for vehicles built solely for automated driving.
- All vehicles, including autonomous ones, must still meet existing stopping-distance requirements under the standards.
- NHTSA listed rearview mirrors, windshield wipers and windshield defrosters as removable features and invited public comments until July 27, 2026, per the Federal Register.
