K. Bhagyaraj, Veteran Tamil Filmmaker, Dies at 73

K. Bhagyaraj, 73, suffered a massive heart attack on June 27, 2026 and was rushed to Apollo Hospital in Chennai. Resuscitation attempts failed and he was pronounced dead. The filmmaker, who celebrated his 50-year milestone in cinema earlier that year, is survived by his wife Poornima Bhagyaraj and children Shanthanu and Saranya.

A multifaceted artist, Bhagyaraj worked as actor, director, screenwriter and composer. He entered the industry as an assistant director to veteran Bharathiraja, appearing in minor roles in *16 Vayathinile* and *Sigappu Rojakkal*. His directorial debut *Suvar Illatha Chithirangal* (1979) introduced a realistic, dialogue-driven style later refined in hits such as *Mouna Geethangal*, *Andha 7 Naatkal*, *Mundhanai Mudichu* and *Thooral Ninnu Pochu*. Bhagyaraj’s protagonists combined wit, ordinariness and self-deprecation, challenging conventional hero tropes.
