China Expands Controls
- China on June 29, 2026 expanded export controls to 40 Japanese defense firms and research institutes after Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi linked Japan’s security to Taiwan.
- The Ministry of Commerce said the step counters Japan’s “new militarism,” blacklisting 20 organisations and placing another 20 on a watch list, while Beijing said normal China-Japan trade would continue.
- Japan’s chief cabinet secretary Minoru Kihara called the measures unacceptable and urged revocation.
