Historical Context

Iridium’s original 66-satellite L-band network launched in 1998 but the company entered Chapter 11 in August 1999 after spending roughly $5 billion on the constellation. A $3 billion Iridium NEXT program, funded by a $492 million SpaceX launch contract, replaced the fleet between January 2017 and January 2019. Rocket Lab’s $8 billion acquisition now extends that consolidation trend in the satellite industry.
