History

Historical Context

After Israel withdrew from southern Lebanon in 2000, Hezbollah seized the border area and built extensive tunnels. The July 12 2006 attack triggered a 34-day war in which Israel discovered and destroyed dozens of passages, leading UN Security Council Resolution 1701 to demand Hezbollah’s disarmament and UNIFIL deployment. Today Israel’s renewed tunnel raids echo that pre-emptive doctrine.
