Deir al-Balah Strike
On 29 June 2026 an Israeli airstrike hit Deir al-Balah, Gaza, killing three Palestinians – 8-year-old Malik Abu Shawish, his grandfather Hassan al-Hanagra and an unnamed adult. Strikes on tents in Al-Mawasi, Khan Younis, killed a 23-year-old mother and her 1-year-old daughter and wounded many.
Ceasefire
Since the U.S.–mediated ceasefire of October 2023, Israeli forces have carried out near-daily strikes in Gaza, saying they target militants planning attacks on troops that occupy about 60 % of the enclave. Parallel West Bank raids have also caused Palestinian deaths.
Casualties
The Gaza Health Ministry records 1,045 Palestinian deaths since the ceasefire, including over 360 women and children, and 3,380 injuries. War totals range from 73,054 to 73,058 deaths and roughly 173,500 wounded. In the West Bank, at least 59 Palestinians have been killed this year, and B’Tselem reports 241 child and teenager deaths since October 2023.

Israel’s military said the Deir al-Balah strike targeted an Islamic Jihad militant and announced the killing of a member involved in the Oct. 7 attacks. Gaza’s Health Ministry repeated its casualty figures without civilian-militant separation. U.S. envoy Nikolay Mladenov said both sides breached the ceasefire. The ICRC reported moving 14 detainees to Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital and urged full access to all Palestinian detainees.
Opposition
B’Tselem condemned the “unprecedented killing of Palestinian children and teenagers” as lacking accountability. Al Jazeera’s Tareq Abu Azzoum said Israeli strikes “intensified… targeting makeshift tents… designated as a safe zone.” Palestinian NGOs urged pressure to free detained doctors. UN commissioner Chris Sidoti called the child-death pattern “absolutely heartbreaking.”

Deir al-Balah officials named the dead as Hassan al-Hanagra, his grandson Malik Abu Shawish, and an unnamed man. Nasser Hospital confirmed the mother and infant killed in Al-Mawasi; the Red Crescent reported two deaths in a coastal tent. Witnesses said the Al-Mawasi strike destroyed two adjacent tents on Al-Rashid Street.
