Job Openings Rise
- The BLS reported 7.594 million job openings in May, above the 7.3 million forecast.
- Wholesale trade added 71,000 openings, accommodation and food services 62,000, real estate 40,000, while healthcare and social assistance lost 110,000.
- Employers hired 45,000 fewer workers, bringing total hires to 5.17 million and the hires rate to 3.3 %.
- Layoffs rose 41,000 to 1.708 million (1.1 % rate), prompting Fed officials to say the tight labor market supports keeping rates high.
