Historical Context

After the 1979 Iranian Revolution toppled Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi and installed Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, Khomeini issued a fatwa on 19 August 1979 declaring jihad on Kurdish rebels such as the KDPI. The new Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and regular army crushed the uprising, killing roughly 10,000 fighters by 1983. The recent Paveh shooting by the Xore Heva militia revives that unresolved Kurdish-IRGC conflict.
