History

Historical Context

On 26 March 1991 Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay signed the Treaty of Asunción, launching Mercosur as a free-trade zone that became a customs union in 1995. The bloc, now representing about 190 million people and $1.5 trillion of GDP, meets EU leaders at a summit chaired by Uruguay’s President Yamandú Orsi to negotiate continent-wide trade rules.
