In July 1903 Henri Desgrange launched the first Tour de France for the struggling newspaper L'Auto, covering 2,428 km in six grueling stages. Maurice Garin won the race and a 6,500-franc prize, while the event lifted L'Auto’s circulation from about 25,000 to 65,000 copies. That early success created a national endurance test that the 2026 Tour continues as a global, multi-media spectacle.
