The 1990 Immigration Act let the Attorney General, later the Homeland Security secretary, grant Temporary Protected Status to nationals who cannot safely return. Haiti gained TPS after the 2010 earthquake and Syria later received TPS, covering about 350,000 Haitians and 6,000 Syrians. On June 25 2026 the Supreme Court’s Mullin v.
