History

Historical Context

Israel’s 2005 unilateral disengagement, championed by Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, removed about 9,000 settlers and dismantled 21 Gaza settlements. The move left Israel controlling Gaza’s airspace, borders and maritime zone, a status the United Nations and the 2024 International Court of Justice still deem an occupation.
