Historical Context

Operation Sail began in 1964 as a tie-in to the New York World’s Fair, and the 1976 Bicentennial parade—organized by the U.S. Coast Guard and National Park Service—featured 16 tall-ship school vessels and fireworks before President Ford. Today the Sail250 celebration revives that tradition, with the cutter Eagle leading a fleet of foreign navies in New York Harbor.
