In October 1973 the House Judiciary Committee opened an impeachment inquiry into President Richard Nixon after the Watergate break-in and the “Saturday Night Massacre.” Hearings began May 9 1974, the committee released 4,133 pages of evidence and, after the August 5 “smoking-gun” tape, Nixon resigned on August 9 1974, handing power to Gerald Ford. That Watergate precedent of congressional subpoenas and public pressure underlies today’s calls for President Donald Trump’s impeachment.
