Tianwen-2 Nears Asteroid
- Tianwen-2 probe reached within about 20 km of asteroid 2016 HO3 (Kamo‘oalewa) on 2 July 2026.
- It launched on 29 May 2025 from Xichang Satellite Launch Center aboard a Long March 3B/G2 rocket and traveled ~1 billion km over 400 days.
- It imaged the asteroid on 6 June 2026, closed to 2,000 km by 19 June 2026 and will study its shape, composition and interior for water or lunar material.
- Tianwen-2 will collect samples, release a capsule during an Earth flyby, then travel to comet 311P.
