Amazon MGM Studios Announces 'The Gatekeeper' Film

Amazon MGM Studios and Di Bonaventura Pictures have officially confirmed development of the film, with producer Pouya Shahbazian attached to oversee production. The project adapts James Byrne’s novel *Deadlock*, a New York Times bestseller featuring ex-operative Desmond “Dez” Aloysius Limerick. Matthew Michael Carnahan will direct, and Oscar-winning screenwriter Brian Helgeland is attached as adapter.

James Byrne, a New York Times bestselling author, created the Dez Limerick series, which currently comprises four titles: *The Gatekeeper* (introduction), *Deadlock* (the primary source for the film), *Chain Reaction*, and *Storm Warning*. All four novels are published by Minotaur Books. *Deadlock* expands on Limerick’s background as an ex-operative navigating high-stakes conflicts, providing the narrative foundation for the upcoming adaptation. Byrne’s novels blend thriller conventions with intricate character development, positioning Limerick as a versatile protagonist capable of operating across covert and overt arenas.

Matthew Michael Carnahan, represented by Creative Artists Agency and attorney Stuart Rosenthal, brings a blend of writing and directing experience to the project. His directorial debut, *Mosul*, premiered at the Venice Film Festival in 2019, and his screenwriting credits include *World War Z*—a Paramount production that grossed more than half a billion worldwide—and *Deepwater Horizon*, a critical success produced by Di Bonaventura Pictures. Brian Helgeland, represented by WME and Jackoway Austen Tyerman, earned an Academy Award for Adapted Screenplay for *L.A. Confidential* and a nomination for *Mystic River*. Helgeland’s recent work includes writing and directing the Paramount+ series *Finestkind*, which starred Tommy Lee Jones, Ben Foster, Jenna Ortega and Toby Wallace, and debuted at TIFF 2023. His broader portfolio also includes *Payback*, *A Knight’s Tale*, *42*, *Legend*, *Man on Fire* and *Green Zone*.
