Historical Context

On 30 April 1916 Germany introduced the first nationwide daylight-saving time, moving clocks ahead one hour to cut coal use. Britain followed weeks later, and its Ministry of Munitions recorded a saving of about 1.5 million kilowatt-hours in the first month. Earlier proposals by New Zealand entomologist George Hudson (1895) and British advocate William Willett (1907) set the stage for the wartime experiment that later spread during the 1970s energy crises.
