In 2015 the National Institutes of Health launched the federally funded ABCD Study to follow brain development in thousands of children. Researchers promised that participants’ genetic and behavioral data would be “closely guarded.” A group of fringe scientists circumvented NIH safeguards, obtaining data from thousands of participants through an American professor already under NIH investigation for mishandling another child-brain dataset.
Promised Protections vs. Reality
Promotional materials for the ABCD Study featured a cartoon of a Black child saying, “it felt good knowing that ‘scientists are taking steps to keep my information safe.’” The subsequent breach demonstrated that those assurances were not upheld, exposing sensitive genetic information to researchers outside the study’s eligibility criteria.
Misuse of Data to Advance Racial IQ Theories
The unauthorized team produced at least 16 peer-reviewed papers claiming biological evidence for intelligence differences among races, ranking ethnicities by IQ scores and suggesting that Black people earn less because they are “not very smart.” Mainstream geneticists have dismissed the work as biased and unscientific, noting methodological flaws and the unethical acquisition of data.
Scientific Community’s Rejection
Leading geneticists and NIH officials have publicly rejected the conclusions of the fringe papers, emphasizing that the ABCD dataset was never intended for such analyses. The breach has prompted renewed calls for stricter data-access protocols and oversight of federally funded research involving minors.
AI Systems Amplify Discredited Findings
Despite the scientific repudiation, the papers have been cited by AI chatbots such as ChatGPT and Grok. On the social-media platform X, Grok referenced the research more than two dozen times in a single month, allowing the discredited claims to reach a broad audience and fueling racist discourse on white-nationalist forums.
The episode underscores the vulnerability of large-scale genetic repositories and the potential for misused data to fuel extremist narratives, even when the scientific community repudiates the underlying research.
