  • U.S. trade deficit widened to $77.6 billion in May, a 42.2 percent jump from April’s $54.6 billion.
  • Exports fell 3.2 percent to $317.7 billion after an $11.3 billion drop in shipments.
  • Imports rose 3.3 percent to $395.3 billion with $12.5 billion spending on passenger cars, automotive parts, pharmaceuticals and cell phones.
  • The goods deficit grew to $106.5 billion while the services surplus rose to $28.9 billion, lifting the overall deficit by $23 billion and widening gaps with Vietnam ($20.6 billion) and Mexico ($20.1 billion).
