Fireworks Spectacle Sends Washington, D.C., Air Quality to Unhealthy Levels

An analysis by Clarity Movement of data from 26 city-operated sensors showed that fine particulate matter (PM 2.5) spiked to more than six times normal levels during the “Freedom 250” fireworks show celebrating the nation’s 250th anniversary. The surge began Saturday evening as private fireworks ignited, intensified around midnight when the official display launched, and peaked at approximately 5 a.m. The city-wide air-quality index remained above the Environmental Protection Agency’s “unhealthy” threshold for about five hours, with two National Mall sensors reaching “very unhealthy” levels. Airborne magnesium, a component of bright-white fireworks, rose by over 9,000 %.

President Donald Trump pledged a 40-minute program he described as “the largest fireworks show in history,” deploying roughly 850,000 pyrotechnic devices. The event, organized by Freedom 250—a Trump-aligned group—was intended to mark the semicentennial of American independence. Prior to the show, the National Park Service warned that air quality near the Mall would be “hazardous” during and after the display and could affect areas up to 15 miles downwind.
