EU Parliament Extends
- EU Parliament voted on July 9 2026 to extend the “Chat Control” regime until April 3 2028; 314-against, 276-for vote fell short of 361 needed to reject it.
- The extension permits voluntary scanning of unencrypted private messages for known CSAM, but end-to-end encrypted services stay exempt.
- Former MEP Patrick Breyer called the outcome a “farce” and cited 2024 data that scanning yielded only 36 % of reports, 99 % of Meta’s reports were already known.
