Historical Context

In July 2010 Culture Minister Ed Vaizey announced Derry~Londonderry as the inaugural UK City of Culture, a programme created after the Department for Culture, Media and Sport sought to replicate Liverpool’s 2008 European Capital of Culture success. The 2013-2017 event spurred tourism growth and the model later guided later designations, including Hull in 2017.
