ICE Shooting of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo Sparks Renewed Calls for Agency Reform

On Tuesday in Houston, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents fatally shot Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, a 35-year-old Mexican immigrant who had lived in the United States for three decades. According to an ICE spokesperson, agents attempted a vehicle stop as part of a targeted operation; Salgado Araujo allegedly failed to obey verbal commands, struck an ICE vehicle, and “weaponized his vehicle in an attempt to run over an ICE law enforcement officer,” prompting the officer to fire in self-defense. Salgado Araujo was transported to a hospital where he died from his wounds. His son confirmed he was on his way to a worksite at the time of the incident.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani of New York City posted that the city “stands with the Salgado family in demanding a full, independent investigation and real accountability,” adding that the city “grieves with you and we will continue to stand beside you in the pursuit of justice.” Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-TX) wrote that “ICE must be held accountable” and called for a “full, independent, transparent investigation.” Rep. Sylvia Garcia (D-TX) echoed the demand for an investigation and highlighted the need for body cameras, clear identification, and an end to “anti-paramilitary-style immigration enforcement.” Rep. Nydia Velázquez (D-NY) also urged a full, independent inquiry and accountability for those responsible.

Democratic lawmakers framed the shooting as evidence that ICE’s current tactics require overhaul. Garcia argued that the incident shows ICE has not learned from the earlier 2023 killing of Renee Good in Minneapolis, noting that “we need to know why Lorenzo was targeted…who authorized the operation.” The incident has intensified calls from progressive officials to abolish ICE altogether.

The Houston shooting follows two high-profile deaths involving ICE officers in Minneapolis earlier in the year: the killing of 37-year-old Renee Good and the death of Alex Pretti, also a 37-year-old U.S. citizen.
