World Santa Claus Congress Turns Aalborg into a Summer Holiday Hub

7/10/2026, 4:15:36 PM

A Mid-Summer Santa Gathering

The World Santa Claus Congress convened in Aalborg, Denmark, for a four-day program while Europe endures summer heat. Dozens of Santas, Mrs. Clauses and elves from Scandinavia, Australia, Hong Kong, Canada and the United States assembled to exchange stories, compare beards and compete in light-hearted contests such as gingerbread eating, gift-wrapping challenges and balloon modeling. The packed agenda also featured several parades through the city.

History and Evolution

The congress originated in 1957 at an amusement park near Copenhagen and relocated to Aalborg on the Jutland peninsula two years ago. Initially created to entertain children, the event has grown into a professional gathering for seasonal performers who normally appear in stores and malls during the Christmas rush. It will celebrate its 70th anniversary in 2027.

Participants and Program

Around three dozen participants attended this year, the majority from Scandinavia. Notable attendees included Paradise Yamamoto from Tokyo, 64-year-old Norwegian Santa Robert Hercz from Oslo, and Danish Santas Simon Brøns (33) and Peter Gislund, an organizer who also works as a Santa in Aalborg each holiday season. Activities ranged from traditional contests to spontaneous performances, with music such as “Feliz Navidad” playing throughout the streets.

Official Statements & Responses

Organizer Peter Gislund emphasized that the congress offers “a chance for professional Santas … to swap stories, compare beards, sharpen their craft and compete in lighthearted contests months before anyone checks naughty-or-nice lists.” He added that the gathering fosters camaraderie, noting that “when Santas are together, they always mingle and talk a little bit… that’s the good part of meeting some Santas from all over the world.”
