Connecticut Beaches Closed After Heavy Rains Trigger Elevated Bacteria Levels

Officials explained that recent heavy rainfall caused storm-water runoff to flow into Long Island Sound. Because rain cannot infiltrate impervious surfaces such as roofs, driveways, streets and parking lots, it collects in catch basins and storm drains, transporting fertilizer, pesticides, oil, fuel residues, tire debris and fecal bacteria from pet waste, raccoons, rodents and other animals residing in the drainage system. Local health departments routinely sample beach water under both wet and dry conditions throughout the swimming season to assess bacterial concentrations.

The Connecticut River Area Health District said water at Harvey’s Beach will be retested on Friday morning to determine if swimming can resume. The Clinton Health Department issued a statement that the water “is not suitable for swimmers” and that daily testing will continue until bacterial counts fall within normal ranges.
