Historical Context

In April 1988 the United States, under President Ronald Reagan, launched Operation Praying Mantis after the guided-missile frigate USS Samuel B. Roberts hit an Iranian mine. The strike sank two Iranian frigates, a fast-attack craft and two oil platforms, pressuring Iran toward the July cease-fire that ended the Iran-Iraq War. The episode remains the largest U.S. surface engagement since World War II.
