Space Force Deploys “Meadowlands” to Disrupt Enemy Satellite Communications

On June 8, the U.S. Space Force officially accepted the Meadowlands Counter Communications System, an upgraded, trailer-mounted antenna developed by L3Harris Technologies. Described as a “device designed to blast electromagnetic beams to silence adversary satellites,” Meadowlands expands the service’s electromagnetic warfare (EW) portfolio. It builds on the earlier Counter Communications System (CCS) Block 10.2, targeting a satellite’s uplink and downlink signals to create a “silence zone” that blocks commands and telemetry without generating physical debris.

Meadowlands detects, denies, disrupts, and degrades hostile use of the electromagnetic spectrum. By directing a focused beam at an adversary satellite’s receiving antenna, the system interferes with the satellite’s software and hardware functions, rendering it effectively inactive. Unlike kinetic anti-satellite weapons that produce debris, Meadowlands’ effects are reversible, aligning with the United States’ 2022 self-imposed ban on anti-satellite tests.
