Ricky Gervais’s 2001 Dance Scene: Health Risks and Script Myths

While celebrating the 25th anniversary of the BBC sitcom *The Office*, Ricky Gervais recalled the dance he performed as David Brent. He said the routine was “probably the most famous single thing I’ve ever done,” but warned that the exertion carried “a small chance of heart failure.” After filming, Gervais was “sat in a corner on a chair and they were fanning me,” describing himself as “the blobbiest I’ve ever been… like 14 stone, no muscles to speak of, just a blob.” The scene was assembled from three separate takes—one with Brent’s colleagues laughing, one with Brent laughing, and one with “those around him looking bewildered”—edited to appear as a single performance. Gervais added that the choreography, including a “crab” move, is something he “couldn’t do now.”

In the BBC Two special *Remember… The Office*, Gervais explained that the published scripts were “transcriptions of what had been on telly,” which annoyed him because many lines originated spontaneously on set. He characterized the production as “loose” and credited himself and co-creator Stephen Merchant for maintaining “absolutely brilliant” scripts. While he denied full improvisation, he described the approach as “what I would call loose.”
