Historical Context

On 25 August 1928 Arsenal became one of the first English clubs to wear numbered shirts, following earlier experiments in Australia (1911) and a 1923 South American tour by Third Lanark. The practice spread when Chelsea used numbers on its 1929 South American tour, earning locals the nickname “Los Numerados.” By the 1939-40 season the Football League made numbers compulsory, establishing the system still used today.
