Media entrepreneur Byron Allen contributed $100,000 to the GoFundMe created for the family of 18-year-old Nolan Xavier Wells, whose body was recovered on Mississippi’s Horn Island after a July 4 disappearance. The campaign, launched by Wells’ mother Christine Wonsley, has raised $574,719 toward a $750,000 goal. Additional high-profile donors include comedian Lil Rel Howrey, Auburn quarterback Deuce Knight, filmmaker Tyler Perry (who agreed to cover funeral costs), and athlete Colin Kaepernick (who will fund an independent autopsy). Rev. Al Sharpton will conduct the funeral service.

Wells and friends set out by boat on Saturday, July 4, to celebrate the holiday on Horn Island. He was last seen around 3 p.m. and failed to return with the group, prompting his mother to file a missing-person report that night. The Jackson County Sheriff’s Department coordinated a two-day search with the U.S. Coast Guard, the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources, the National Park Service, and a U.S. park ranger. On the morning of Monday, July 6, the ranger discovered a body at the island’s northwestern tip; the family confirmed it was Wells later that day. An autopsy was scheduled for Tuesday, July 7. Jackson County Sheriff John Ledbetter has said the investigation remains active and the cause of death is still undetermined.
