The American Film Institute (AFI) will confer Doctor of Fine Arts degrees honoris causa on Academy Award-winning filmmaker Guillermo del Toro and Academy Award-winning screenwriter Aaron Sorkin during the AFI Conservatory’s commencement ceremony for the Class of 2026. The ceremony is scheduled for Friday, August 7, 2026, at Hollywood’s TCL Chinese Theatre. The honors recognize the two veterans’ “contributions of distinction to the art of the moving image.”
Background on the Recipients
Guillermo del Toro, born in Guadalajara, Mexico, first gained worldwide attention with the 1993 co-production CRONOS, which premiered at Cannes and earned the Mercedes-Benz Award. Since then he has directed and produced acclaimed films such as THE SHAPE OF WATER, PAN’S LABYRINTH, PINOCCHIO, and the Netflix epic FRANKENSTEIN. His work has garnered eleven Oscars and multiple international honors, and he recently celebrated the 20th anniversary of PAN’S LABYRINTH at Cannes, with a 4K/3D re-release planned.
Aaron Sorkin made his Broadway debut with A FEW GOOD MEN, earning the John Gassner Award. His screen credits include THE SOCIAL NETWORK (Academy Award, Golden Globe, BAFTA, Critics’ Choice), MONEYBALL, STEVE JOBS, and the recent THE SOCIAL RECKONING, slated for release on October 9, 2026. In television, Sorkin created THE WEST WING, SPORTS NIGHT, and THE NEWSROOM, earning multiple Peabody and Emmy awards.
Official AFI Statement
“Guillermo del Toro and Aaron Sorkin are peerless, prolific creative forces at a time the world needs them most,” said Bob Gazzale, AFI President and CEO. “From the vast nature of dreams to an incisive line of dialogue, their contributions to the art form have inspired audiences around the world — as they will inspire this year’s graduates of the AFI Conservatory.”
Impact and Future Recognition
The honorary degrees place del Toro and Sorkin alongside a distinguished roster that includes Robert Altman, Maya Angelou, Kathryn Bigelow, Clint Eastwood, Quentin Tarantino, and Michelle Yeoh. By honoring creators whose work spans horror, fantasy, political drama, and television, AFI underscores the continuing relevance of narrative storytelling in shaping cultural discourse and inspiring the next generation of filmmakers.
