In the kindergarten lesson on helping one’s neighbor, teachers are instructed to discuss the Golden Rule using “lessons from the Bible” and to describe the Bible as “a collection of ancient texts” that are “the core books of the Jewish and Christian religions.” A third-grade Thanksgiving lesson directs teachers to note that the governor of Plymouth offered a prayer citing “several passages from the Christian Bible in the book of Psalms,” and to explain that Psalms is “a collection of songs, poems and hymns that are used in both Jewish and Christian worship.” Participation by individual districts is voluntary; however, districts that adopt the lessons may receive additional state funding.
