Google Expands Data Collection with “Search Services History” Setting

Core Change: Search Services History and “Save Media”
Google is rolling out a new “Search Services History” control for accounts signed into Search, Gmail, YouTube or Android. When the “Save Media” sub-setting is enabled, Google may retain images uploaded to Google Lens, voice recordings from Search, Translate speaking-practice audio, and other media from Search services. The company says the saved media “may be used to improve Google’s AI models and technologies.”
Google’s Explanation
Google states the new controls inherit the user’s prior choices for Web & App Activity and Search Personalization. If those were on, Search Services History and Save Media are likely on by default; if they were off, the new settings default to off. Users can “Turn off” the feature or “Turn off and delete activity” to stop future collection. Google adds that media already used to train AI “is no longer connected to your account and may be kept for up to four years.” The company also notes that turning off Save Media stops future media from being used for generative-AI training, though text-based activity, transcripts and some AI responses may still be saved.
Privacy Concerns and Opposition
Critics warn that the setting can “slide right past you” because it lives inside deeper account controls and rolls out gradually. They point out that disabling Save Media does not automatically erase previously stored media, and that once media enters the AI-training pipeline, deleting the original item “may not pull it back.” The inability to fully purge past contributions raises broader worries about long-term data retention and the extent of personal inputs feeding Google’s AI systems.
How Users Can Manage the Setting
To opt out, users should sign in on a computer, locate the Search Services History section, and uncheck the “Save Media” box. For accounts already affected, they can select “Turn off and delete activity” and then review “View and delete saved history” to remove older items. The process must be repeated for each Google Account a person uses, including personal, work, or legacy accounts.
Impact and Outlook
The rollout expands the pool of user-generated media that can train Google’s generative-AI models, potentially enhancing personalization while deepening privacy trade-offs. As the feature spreads, users will need to stay vigilant about account settings, and regulators may scrutinize how long retained media is stored and whether consent mechanisms are sufficiently transparent.
