Historical Context

In August 2006 the UN Security Council unanimously adopted Resolution 1701, ending the 34-day Israel-Hezbollah war with a cease-fire, Israeli withdrawal and the deployment of roughly 12,000 UNIFIL peacekeepers alongside Lebanese army units in the south. The resolution also demanded Hezbollah’s disarmament, a clause that remains unfulfilled and fuels today’s six-round talks led by U.S. envoy Yochi Leiter and Lebanese delegate Nada Maawad.
