Britain Labels Threats

Britain fast-tracked the National Security (State Threats) Act to label three foreign groups as security threats.
The UK designated Iran’s IRGC, the IMCR, and Russia’s GRU, punishable by up to 14 years’ imprisonment or a fine.
Minister Angela Eagle said the designations stem from evidence of IRGC-linked threats on UK soil.
Independent reviewer Jonathan Hall KC had earlier urged a classification power, prompting the rapid legislation.

Historical Context

After the 7 July 2005 London bombings, Parliament enacted the Terrorism Act 2006, which raised pre-charge detention to 28 days and broadened proscription powers first set out in the Terrorism Act 2000. That framework paved the way for today’s National Security (State Threats) Act, which criminalises support for foreign militias such as Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps and Russia’s GRU.
