Arrest of U.S. Activist Fergie Chambers in Spain Sparks Political Debate

American activist and Cox family heir Fergie Chambers was detained on Friday morning in the Morna Valley of Ibiza, Spain, after U.S. authorities issued an international arrest warrant. Seven Spanish police officers identified themselves before handcuffing Chambers, who was then brought before a judge of the Audiencia Nacional. The judge denied bail, and the case will proceed under Spain’s extradition procedures.

Over the past decade Chambers has directed portions of his inherited fortune toward Gaza relief, funding the Sameer Project’s bakery, desalination plant and free clinic, and granting $100,000 to the Zaynab Project for mental-health services. He also sponsored Tunisia’s Club Africain football team and contributed $250,000 to the Sameer Project. Beyond Palestine, Chambers participated in U.S. Black Lives Matter protests and the Standing Rock demonstrations. In a 2022 interview with *Le Monde* he said he had “always been drawn to the cause of the oppressed.”

Spanish prosecutors allege that after leaving the United States in 2023 Chambers transferred approximately $7.5 million abroad to “seek opportunities to provide material support to Hamas.” The indictment lists charges of international money laundering, riot and conspiracy to riot. If convicted on the primary money-laundering count, Chambers faces up to 20 years in prison. The U.S. Department of Justice has requested extradition; Spanish authorities have not yet commented on the hearing schedule.

Supporters describe the arrest as “politically motivated” and an “overt act of political repression by the Trump administration against a supporter of Palestinian human rights.” They argue the extradition is part of a broader campaign to suppress global solidarity movements. Critics also note the arrest coincided with a U.S. invitation by Secretary of State Marco Rubio to senior ministers from more than 60 countries to discuss “transnational far-left terrorism,” raising concerns about expanding counter-terrorism powers against left-wing activists.
