Record Overnight Temperatures Heighten Health Risks Across the United States

7/14/2026, 8:51:33 AM

Unrelenting Nighttime Heat

The National Weather Service forecasts more than 90 temperature records to be tied or broken this week, most of them overnight highs. Cities such as Fort Lauderdale, Miami, Tampa, Galveston and Charleston are not expected to dip below 80 °F (27 °C) after sunset, while traditionally cold locales—including Fargo, North Dakota; International Falls, Minnesota; and Portland, Maine—will remain above 70 °F (21 °C). The persistent “heat dome” covering much of the country prevents the usual nighttime cooling that helps the body recover from daytime heat.

Health Consequences of Warm Nights

Health experts warn that sustained high nighttime temperatures are more dangerous than daytime spikes because the body’s core temperature cannot reset. “That’s where the health outcomes are amplified, particularly for the elderly and vulnerable communities,” said Marshall Shepherd, University of Georgia meteorology professor. Kristie Ebi, a public-health and climate scientist at the University of Washington, explained that mortality often rises on the second or third day of a heat wave when the body remains unable to cool: “Mortality starts the second or third day.” She added, “It’s hard to know you’re getting in trouble with the heat. This is why we need to be more proactive.”

Official Guidance

Authorities stress checking on older adults, pregnant people, and anyone with health challenges. Early warning signs include heavy sweating, muscle cramps and headaches. Experts recommend staying hydrated, using fans with a spray of water, immersing feet in cold water, and cooling clothing with water.

Mitigation Tips Without Air Conditioning

For households lacking air conditioning, simple measures can provide relief: sit in front of a fan while misting the skin, soak clothing in water, and keep a cold water source nearby. Drinking ample fluids remains essential.

Looking Ahead

The heat dome is expected to linger through Wednesday, keeping overnight temperatures elevated and maintaining heightened health risks until cooler conditions return later in the week.
