Born in Marseilles, Illinois on October 1, 1923, Morello earned a master’s degree in African and Latin American/Peru history from Loyola University Chicago in 1954 and taught English abroad in Germany, Peru, and Japan. After a stint in Kenya (1960-1963) where she married activist Ngethe Njoroge, she settled in Harlem, then returned to Illinois to teach at Libertyville High School for 22 years. In 1987 she founded Parents for Rock and Rap, directly opposing the Parents Music Resource Center. Her advocacy included trips to the Soviet Union, leadership against the 1991 Pornography Victims Compensation Act, and volunteer work with the Salvation Army Rehabilitation Center and Chicago’s Cuba Coalition. In 1996 she received the Hugh M. Hefner First Amendment Award.
