A fire erupted in the engine room of the Stolt Magnesium tanker shortly after midnight on Monday in international waters.

Historical Context

In May 1984 Iraq’s attacks on Iranian tankers sparked the Iran-Iraq “Tanker War,” prompting Iran to target Kuwaiti vessels carrying Iraqi oil from 13 May 1984 onward. Kuwait’s December 1986 request led the U.S. to launch Operation Earnest Will on 24 July 1987, escorting re-flagged tankers with a multinational naval force. The 2024 Iranian missile strikes on commercial ships echo those 1980s Gulf confrontations, driving renewed U.S. Central Command airstrikes.
