History

Historical Context

China’s nuclear deterrent grew from the first JL-2 launch off the Bohai Sea in December 2019 and the Type 094’s patrols that began in December 2015. On 6 July 2026 the People’s Liberation Army Navy fired a JL-2/-3 from a Type 094 into the South Pacific, a missile traveling about 7,300 km. The launch prompted alerts from the Japan Coast Guard and analysis by the Center for Strategic and International Studies.
